From January 1993 until April 1999, Barbara Kinney was one of four personal photographers for the President of the United States, Bill Clinton. As a White House Photographer, she documented the official duties of the President at the White House, on domestic and international trips and during more private moments with the First Family.

In 1996, she received a first place in the World Press Photo Foundation competition for “Primping for Peace,” a photo of President Clinton, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and Jordan’s King Hussein straightening their ties before an event in the East Room of the White House. Chairman Yasir Arafat is pictured from behind as he observes the four leaders. The photo originally appeared in LIFE Magazine and was featured in the year-end publications of TIME and Newsweek. The photograph also appeared in the September/October 1996 issue of American PHOTO magazine and was listed as one of “The Photos of The Century” in the  November/December 1999 issue of the same publication.

During her White House years, Barbara’s photos were published on the covers of TIME and Newsweek and in various publications such as George, U.S. News and World Report, LIFE, People and Paris Match. Her photograph of Hillary Rodham Clinton sitting with five former First Ladies is part of an exhibit and book titled “Picturing the Century: 100 Years of Photography from the National Archives.”

Kinney was a picture editor and photographer for USA Today from 1982-1988, followed by five years of working as a freelance photographer in Washington DC. She served as Global Entertainment Picture Editor for Reuters News Service from 2000-2001. She has been a photography instructor at American University and Gallaudet University, serving as a member of the adjunct faculty for both colleges.

She was selected to be a photographer on the book projects “A Day in the Life of the U.S. Military” and “A Day in the Life of the American Woman.”

Born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, Kinney graduated in 1980 from the William Allen White School of Journalism at University of Kansas with a degree in photojournalism and news-editorial. She moved to Washington DC after college and lived there for 21 years before relocating to Seattle, WA where she is currently a picture editor for the Seattle Times.
