She has worked in more than 20 countries for publications including National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, the New York Times Magazine, German Geo, Paris Match,, Marie Claire, Mother Jones and Harpers.
Her images have been exhibited in individual and groups shows in museums, galleries and universities in New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., San Francisco, France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
She has received several photographic awards, including a 2005 World Press award, a 2005 grant from the Open Society Institute’s Documentary Photography Fund.
Past projects include a documentary investigation for TIME on rape and ethnic cleansing of Muslim women in Bosnia, a cover story for Newsweek on life under the Taliban in Afghanistan, a portfolio of images for Harpers on the corporate homogenization of Times Square and a personal project on the rise of the militia movement and the political and religious right in the United States.
Her first book, "Purple Hearts -- Back from Iraq,” portraits and interviews with American soldiers wounded in the Iraq War, was published by Trolley in August 2004. Images and texts from the Purple Hearts project have been featured on ABC, CBS, PBS, CNN, and reviewed and/or excerpted in more than forty publications worldwide. American Photography named it one of the ten best photo books in 2004. A feature length documentary film based on the book was produced by the acclaimed Dutch VPRO channel and broadcast on television and film festivals worldwide.
Nina received a B.A. from the University of Chicago and a M.S. from Columbia University. She is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography in New York City where she lives. |
