Woodbury, NY— Since Congress first proclaimed National Photo Week back in 1984, the holiday has become a monthlong celebration in May, driven by consumer awareness programs developed by the photo industry. Photo Marketing Association has taken the lead in those programs, and this year, it is joined by TakeGreatPictures.com in a truly innovation promotion that both encourages consumers to embrace the joy of photography and to visit their local photo retailers.

The joint PMA/PMDA project offers retailers numerous point-of-purchase materials they can display to tell consumers to "Get Out and Take Some Photos" during National Photo Month. The POP materials direct consumers to TakeGreatPictures.com (TGP), where they can post their springtime photos as part of a photo contest open to all.

Gary Pageau, PMA spokesman and publisher, will provide retailers with the POP materials, which go beyond what PMA already offers retailers to promote May as National Photo Month. The materials, which are available to retailers beginning the week of April 20th, show photographs and tips, along with the suggestion that consumers can see all the tips and places to take photos in their area by logging onto TakeGreatPictures.com.

To tie-in with the POP program, Richard Rabinowitz, president of Rainmaker Marketing Services and volunteer editor for TakeGreatPictures.com, has gathered more than 75 professional photographers from around the country to take part in the program. TGP is featuring photos and tips on shooting in spring and summer from these photographers, who use a range of different cameras from a breadth of manufacturers. Their photos are displayed with a list of places within their respective communities they feel are perfect shooting locations for local picture takers. Each of their images includes a caption that names the locale and gives directions to get there, as well as explains why it is a great photo op, along with a photo tip. Consumers are encouraged to visit those locations, but they may submit photos taken anywhere for posting on TakeGreatPictures.com. To view the current tips, log onto: www.takegreatpictures.com/HOME/Columns/TGP_Choice/Details/national_photo_month.fci.

Contest rules and instructions on submitting photographs are posted on TGP, where consumers are also directed to visit their local photo retailers during National Photo Month. Additionally, site visitors will be able to vote on the best 50 springtime photos.

With more than 90,000 unique visitors per month, TakeGreatPictures.com was created and maintained by the PhotoImaging Information Council, a consumer-driven education program supported by PMDA (PhotoImaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association), PMA and leading manufacturers in the photo-imaging industry. In addition to photo tips and techniques from master photographers, the site offers the latest news on products, artists, photo contests, reviews of photography books, columns on both digital photography and scrapbooking, a calendar of photogenic events and destinations, and a place for consumers to share their images.
